Brunette was a sound art and media collective I was a part of with Alvaro GironTony Halmos and Ulysses Castellanos. Brunette created live sound collages using vinyl records, DJ software such Traktor and Ableton Live, aleatoric sound generating modules for the iPad, the VJ software Modul8 and the VJ application for Virtual DJ. We composed sound pieces in real time, combining sound recordings with video images and the audio track from video material is incorporated into the mix and used as an audio component. We combined video mixing with sound to create a totally immersive environment, enveloping the audience within a visual and aural vortex.

Selected Works

“Heavy Mass” (2012)

A live sound and video collage create by means of vinyl records, Tech 12 turntables, DJ software such Traktor and Ableton Live, aleatoric sound generating modules for the iPad, the VJ software Modul8 and the VJ application for Virtual DJ. “Heavy Mass” was a multimedia performance composed of sound and video mashups in real time, combining sound recordings with video images that are projected from multiple projectors around the room. The audio track from the video material was incorporated into the mix and used as an audio component.

Brunette performed “Heavy Mass” wearing white robes, and assumes different poses and actions that allude to worship. These nonsensical actions point to the absurdity of worshipping anything at all.

The elements that are remixed in “Heavy Mass” come from sources as varied as horror film footage, YouTube videos of possessions, 20th Century, classical and electroacoustic music, jazz, old 45 pop records, gospel music, musique concrete, techno, house, hip hop, drum n’ bass, etc.

Video Documentation of “Binaural Beats” Performance (2013)

Based on the scientific study of brainwave synchronization by means of tonalities, loops and saturation (known to the scientific community as “Brain Entrainment”), “Binaural Beats” is subversive audio-visual therapy for the YouTube generation. Employing live video mixing and improvisations from multiple audio sources to create an immersive environment, Binaural Beats usurps the mantle of mind control from the cultish, fashionable consumerist media-driven culture in a kind of ethereal New Age workout. “Binaural Beats” quotes elements from science fiction and horror films, self-help audiocassettes and binaural tones, and speaks in the subtly modulating drone tongue of Lamont Young’s New York Dream House, infiltrating collective consciousness with oceanic blessings for the astral-travel set.

“A Journey with Barry” (2013)

I shot this audio/visual work for Tony Halmos, which screened during our “Binaural Beats” performance.
